SUMMER SURF CAMPS: images from last year
What sets us apart from other surf schools is the ratio of students to instructors (never more than 5:1). That means your child is getting focused attention with our instructors in the waves. At Surfclass our students learn fundamental wave-riding, respect for ocean and environment, proper surf etiquette and more.....
- Environmental education – developing a keen awareness of our surroundings both onshore and offshore, and understanding a surfer’s part in the vast ocean ecosystem we are so fortunate to play in.
- Ocean Science and Safety- How do tides, currents, and winds combine to create waves? What are the different types of surf breaks and how do they differ? What do you need to know to be prepared for dangerous conditions in the water?
- Stewardship – Our students learn the true meaning of localism through participation in the preservation, maintenance and protection of surf breaks and beaches. We conduct weekly beach cleanups and give important lectures on environmental issues surfers must be aware of.
- Surf Culture – board design and manufacturing, surf gear, surf history, legends past and present, music, surf art, surf travel, video/photography and more…
CAMP DETAILS: images from last year
Campers will meet Monday through Wednesday at Solimar Beach in Ventura. On Thursday, campers meet at Fletcher Chouinard Designs, "the Patagonia Surf Shop" in Ventura, to see how surfboards are made from start to finish in an environmentally friendly manner. Following the shop tour, campers drive to Surfers' Point in front of the Crowne Plaza Hotel to learn surf etiquette and practice their new skills. Friday's camp will also be held at Surfers' Point.
All students are provided with a full wetsuit and a surfboard for the duration of the camp. We ask that students provide their own towels and sunscreen! Students should also bring a sweatshirt, bottle of water, and a light snack.
Every member of the Surfclass.com staff is CPR and First Aid certified. We use a maximum 5:1 ratio with our instructors and students. Daily activities include surf instruction and practice, beach games, ocean safety discussions, and ocean and beach science presentations. Some other activities may include nature hikes, Chumash Indian presentations, talks from the Surfrider foundation, lifeguard and ranger presentations, tour of a local surf shop and shaper’s studio, and world class Frisbee lessons!
Ages: Minimum age is 7 years old. Our classes are geared for all levels. We do like the students to be progressing in swimming skills. We do teach them the process of surfing. In that process we will learn how waves are made, relating to currents, rip currents, safety, and understanding your surroundings and how to read the beach, paddling, wave selection, etiquette and of course..... the ride.
We have awesome staff /CPR/First Aid Certs. We lather the students in sunscreen all day long. We ask the students to bring a lunch and light snack, water, towel, and a change of warm clothes in case the fog rolls in. We offer group, private and summer surfcamps for kids.
All the dates are posted at www.surfclass.com under surfcamps 2007 schedule.
I hope to see you as well and very exited to share the stoke with the kids.
